To Temp or not to Temp?

13th December 2018

Whilst we continue to see growth within the construction sector, the uncertainty over Brexit and sustainable overseas investment causes many contractors to remain cautious about full time staffing. This has meant an increase in the popularity of temporary skilled and unskilled labour within the industry.

So, if you’re struggling to find a permanent job or don’t want to tie yourself down to one role for a long period of time, temping could be the answer.

Here we share some of the reasons why our ex-Forces team have chosen to temp.

You’re in control

One of the biggest benefits of temporary jobs is flexibility. YOU are in control of your career and it’s far easier to take career breaks and fit your job around your life. Although not having a fixed job may be scary at first, it’s easy to become addicted to the freedom of doing temporary work as and when you want to.

Learn new skills

Different companies use different systems to get the job done, even if they’re doing the same work. By spending time temping across various projects, you can learn new skills and see how different companies operate, making you far more employable and really enriching your CV.

Experience counts

And that brings us on to experience. If you manage to work on a couple of contracts with respected companies, you’ll find it immediately makes your CV more impressive and could mean the difference between ending up on the Yes or No pile.

Network, network, then network some more

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Although not entirely true, there is something to be said for building up contacts. Whether it’s for references or meeting like-minded people who may be able to help you further down the line, temping can really lengthen your contacts book.

A foot in the door

Gaining exposure is vital for Service leavers. You have a unique and wide skill set along with valuable qualities and a strong work ethic. If you’re looking to break into this competitive industry then a temporary job could be a very important foot in the door. In our experience clients remember names and those who shine on the job always get invited back.

All work and no play

Temp work allows you to take more time out for yourself. Supporting your resettlement has never been more important to us and a temp job can help you to gain perspective, dip your toe in the water, spend time readjusting to civilian life, catching up with family or embarking upon a part time course. Several of our temporary labourers are on a college course and gaining on the job experience as a temporary labourer supporting their chosen professional.

You’re still protected

It’s important to remember that as a temporary employee you still have rights and we ensure you are entitled to benefits like sick pay, holiday allowance and regular pay. We support you and ensure our clients do to, this is why when onsite with a host client we expect the same quality of working conditions for you as their permanent workforce.

Onwards and upwards

Don’t forget, if you are after something more permanent, many temporary jobs can lead to permanent positions, particularly if you prove yourself to be invaluable to the company. Never turn down a temporary assignment with an interesting company – you never know where it might lead…

Having a gap filler

Many of our service leavers go on after qualifying to run their own successful business, for example a tiling company or joinery business, but that doesn’t mean they have to leave the Milifix support network. Our flexible rota means that you can source your own projects and take on our temporary jobs as and when it suits you.
